The first time, we traveled to the southern part of Carretera Austral (from Coyhaique to Tortel), whereas the second time, we explored the northern part (from Puerto Montt to Coyhaique via Chilo\u00e9) in a camper van.  <\/p>\n<p>As an introduction, for those who have no idea what to expect on Carretera Austral, it is a road trip to the southern tip of the continent, perfect for travelers interested in discovering authentic, rural Patagonia. Be ready to cross <strong>sumptuous landscapes<\/strong>, endless lakes, in different <strong>shades of blue<\/strong>,<strong>exceptional views<\/strong>, in an <strong>unforgettable atmosphere<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>As mentioned in some of our blog posts, <strong>Torres del Paine National Park <\/strong> recently became a <strong>victim<\/strong> of its international fame. While the beauty of the landscapes does it justice, the logistics of booking <strong>accommodations<\/strong> (including, and especially, the campsites along the W trek), as well as meals, not to mention the <strong>budget<\/strong>, require careful consideration before embarking on the trip. Its creation was ordered by Augusto Pinochet in 1976, and the construction has not been easy. A path had to be traced through a <strong style=\"box-sizing: inherit;\">dense forest<\/strong>, rocky terrain had to be excavated, bridges had to be built\u2026all in a wet, rainy climate. Even today, the <strong style=\"box-sizing: inherit;\">mythical <\/strong>road is <strong style=\"box-sizing: inherit;\">not fully paved<\/strong>. Don\u2019t expect to exceed 40 mph, unless you rent a big pickup or 4\u00d74 vehicle.  <\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: inherit; background-color: #ffffff;\">Ruta 7 starts in <strong style=\"box-sizing: inherit;\">Puerto Montt<\/strong> and ends at <strong style=\"box-sizing: inherit;\">Villa O\u2019Higgins<\/strong>. And at the end of the road, you will reach the Southern Ice Fields, while in between, you will discover natural parks and glaciers of <strong style=\"box-sizing: inherit;\">unparalleled beauty<\/strong>. You can get a map (in exchange for a small donation) once you disembark from the ferry, at the small restaurant or the ranger station if it is open. You can drive through the park on a gravel road. All campsites maintain <strong style=\"box-sizing: inherit;\">standards. <\/strong> There are two areas in the park. We also want to mention that this is where the <strong>Belgian<\/strong> brand of <strong>craft beer D\u2019Olbek <\/strong>is manufactured. D\u2019olbek is produced by the descendants of Belgian pioneers (the family of Smet d\u2019Olbecke de Halleux), who settled there in the 50s. <\/p>\n<h3>Villa Cerro Castillo<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/travelcoachchile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/0v2-GOPR1492-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Hiking cerro castillon northern patagonia chile\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\"><\/p>\n<p>62 miles south of Coyhaique, you will find the town of Villa Cerro Castillo. There are ranches that offer <strong>beautiful horseback riding<\/strong>, and you can even take the adventure to the next level by partaking in &#8220;cordero al palo,&#8221; a traditional barbecue of lamb cooked over a wood fire. You can kayak or take a boat ride in the reserve.<\/p>\n<h3>Parque Patagonia<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/travelcoachchile.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_7912-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\"><\/p>\n<p>This park is the Tompkins\u2019 second. There is a long path that leads you to the welcome center, where you will probably see guanacos grazing. These animals have returned the park thanks to the incredible <strong>conservation work<\/strong> put in place by the Tompkins&#8217; NGO. The park is ideal for hiking enthusiasts who have several days to spend there. The campsites are high quality. For a day <strong>hike,<\/strong> we suggest checking out the Los Aviles trail, also recommended by our clients. Lagunas Altas trail is also interesting but may be a bit long, so we recommend stopping halfway (when you reach the first lake) if you are short on time. <\/p>\n<h3>Chile Chico<\/h3>\n<p>This is a compulsory stop if you want to return to Coyhaique by ferry, crossing Lake General Carrera. From Puerto Guadal, it takes around 3 hours on a <strong>scenic mountain road. <\/strong> The village is extraordinary because it is located on the shores of a turquoise blue <strong>lake<\/strong>, close to the Argentinean border, not far from the Andean<strong> peaks<\/strong>. The town also provides access to the Jeinimeni reserve, from where you can discover a superb panorama of <strong>Chacabuco<\/strong> Valley.
